So, what will you be doing? This purpose of this role is to provide operations and HSE with senior environmental expertise and advice, performing audits and associated reporting in accordance with Drax Group's environmental permit and HSE requirements, while providing support to our compliance approach and group level management system documentation.
The role will facilitate remote and on-site collaboration and discussion on Drax group-wide minimum environmental standards to support the business to achieve Drax's OneSafeDrax vision.
The role is required to ensure environmental performance and compliance of Pellet Operations and supports delivery of the HSE Improvement Strategy as approved by the Drax Board.
The role will help support the development of a risk-based, values-driven approach to HSE management, establishing the necessary conditions to drive safe, reliable, compliant, and sustainable practices, culture, and mind-set.
It will have a role in Group HSE compliance, ensuring good practices are captured, rolling out recommendations, seeking collaboration, and assisting in process enhancement rollout, to improve on environmental performance, regulatory compliance, and reporting.
Who you are? Key Accountabilities:
Ability to understand all operating permits maintained at the pellet production facilities and requirements associated with each Preparation of compliance submissions, as required, including air emission, waste, wastewater discharge and other relevant reports and documents that support compliant pellet production operations (SMAR's, DMR's, ACC, AEERS, SARA 312/313, annual waste reporting, etc.
) Provide leadership and necessary training to plant personnel so that all facility employees have the knowledge and skills necessary to comply with environmental regulations and policies.
Training should emphasize Environmental Compliance over Production Coordinate and/or participate in the collection, review, and submission of data to support environmental reporting programs Work may include waste treatment, site remediation, or pollution control technology.
Serve as liaison with federal, state, or local agencies or officials on issues pertaining to solid or hazardous waste program requirements On-site audits and site visits as required Responsible for conducting hazardous waste, SPCC, SWPPP, and groundwater inspections if required.
Emergency Spill Response for level 3 spills Responsible for supporting the environmental management system and associated processes Conducts Method 9 Opacity Observations when on site Ensure operating parameters established by permit are being upheld to the best of the site's ability Self-starter with the ability to work with other departments to maintain and implement environmental systems Must be willing to travel within Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and semi-annually Arkansas Coordinate all aspects of stack testing programs:
Regulatory agency notifications, management of test contractors, communicate requirements to on-site personnel, evaluate test results, data and procedures for compliance with applicable environmental requirements Prepares and maintains environmental documents and records Implements environmental programs and initiatives Assist with environmental requirements for new or other development activities within Drax Ensure all required compliance tasks are being completed at each location, working from a compliance calendar and auditing plant data Permitting for new plants, amendments, expansions, decommissioning, etc.
Ensuring compliance with all environmental required training Research, design, plan, or perform engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers, experts in law or business, or other specialists to address environmental problems Obtain, update, or maintain compliance calendars, risk registries, incident investigations, permits, or standard operating procedures Suggest and develop strategy with the Director of Environment Other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science, or related discipline Minimum 10
years of experience in the environmental field Experience with environmental regulations and agency interaction Familiar with Louisiana and Mississippi laws, including Air permit requirements Experience interacting with state agencies such as MDEQ, LDEQ Solid, working knowledge of Environmental regulations at state, federal, and local level; understands environmental, concepts, practices, standards, and regulations Experience developing and implementing Title V compliance programs or experience with air quality compliance issues preferred Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Must possess a valid driver's license A credible strong leader with the ability to communicate at all levels of the organization Strong team working ethic and problem-solving skills Ability to mentor, coach, encourage, hold people accountable and set high standards in all aspects of the departments work Strong analytical skills and the ability to apply sound business and commercial knowledge in the production arena Preference will be given to candidates with stack emission and industrial wastes discharge permit experience Project management skills are a plus Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Self-motivated and self-directed to work independently with minimal supervision, yet able to work as a team member Possess or ability to obtain Visible Emissions Observer certification Graduate in a science, engineering, or related discipline with sufficient practical 'hands-on' experience of delivering environmental reporting and audits.
Technical writing capability, with attention to detail and adherence to timelines Knowledge of pellet production facilities and operations and comprehensive knowledge in the area of responsibility Demonstration of a detailed understanding of the framework of environmental compliance Minimum of 3 years previous experience in biomass related industry is an asset but not required Professional membership (or willingness to work towards) a relevant environment professional body an asset Familiarity with pellet plant construction and operations is an asset Excellent English written and verbal communication skills Proficient in Microsoft Office and Microsoft Project or similar project software Excellent organizational and administrative skills with the ability to work under minimum direction and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously Strong math and analytical skills Ability to pass client required drug testing and background checks Special Features:
